At Omaha’s Fox 42, talk show personality Tom Becka hosts “Up Front with Tom Becka” using an Allen & Heath XB-10 Compact Broadcast Mixer. The XB-10 mixes microphones, stereo inputs and telco sources with internal EQ and compression while triggering live cameras and recorded videos via an external video switcher and player. This allows Becka to operate as a cost-effective one-man crew, hosting, directing and producing his own shows.

Broadcast Supply Worldwide of Tacoma, Washington provided the Allen & Heath XB-10 for Fox 42, incorporating it into a full production system that includes BSW’s own “HDVmixer”, a multi-purpose video switcher, character generator, video streaming encoder and video recorder with social media integration.

BSW’s John Lynch explained, “I met Tom Becka at a Nebraska Broadcasters’ Association show and he told me about the programs he was doing. So we set him up with a trial of the XB-10 and our exclusive video for radio solution HDVmixer and now Tom the talent has become Tom the producer/director. When he taps someone’s mic button on the XB-10, that person’s camera fires off. When he brings in a video recording, the television feed changes to the video player. We’re using the mixer’s GPIO contact closures to make that happen.”

A Fox 42 station engineer commented, “Tom says the XB-10 is easy to operate even though he’s doing everything. That’s the appeal of this system. Tom can shoot his own stuff and we don’t need to have a full crew.”

Jeff Hawley, Allen & Heath USA’s Marketing Manager, added, “Allen & Heath offers flexible solutions from compact podcast-centric ZED mixers to specialized broadcast-style XB consoles all the way up to our flagship dLive Digital Mixing System. It’s great to see people like Tom finding creative ways to better connect and share with their audience through our technology at all levels.”
